Kannawidan

http://marianehazelpalomares.blogspot.com/2019/02/kannawidan-festival.html

Kannawidan is a variant of the Ilocano word "tawid" meaning heritage or inheritance. Kannawidan has its beginnings in 1992 when Guia Monroy Valenciano, then vice-president of PCI Bank, began sounding out to friends about establishing a museum. Her son Al, an artist, and the late Perlita Alviar-Foz, who once served as a curator of the Ayala Museumin Vigan, encouraged her. The idea caught on fast. Among the instant converts were: Ogie Balmaceda Alviar and Alice Raval Ventura, the wife of then city mayor Cesar Ventura. Together with Guia and Al, they called on Francis Ablan, then Caltex Phils. President.

The old and the new in Ilocano culture are both featured in this year’s Kannawidan Ylocos Festival, the festival of Ilocos Sur that celebrates its being a separate province from Ilocos Norte, and its being a treasure chest of traditions and culture. Kannawidan became one of the most awaited annual celebrations in the province and consequently improves Ilocano culture. One way to understand community is to look at it as a social construction, in which people create the feeling of similarity based on their culture, thus the starting point of community is the culture (Cohen, 1985). This concept presents disagreement on understanding community as a fixed structure with components and a mechanism. Instead, Cohen drives us to look at how community appears based on human interpretation of cultural meanings, rather than on objective forms. It becomes necessary to understand the construction of culture, along this line of thinking. Geertz (1973, in Ziakas) explained that “culture is made by symbols, and their uniqueness can be seen under the expression of social behavior.” Similarly, Cohen expressed that culture, in itself, is a symbol which equips people to be social. It has developed different activities to showcase the richness of Ilocos Sur culture and heritage. One of which became the most popular part of the festival community food ways. Here, the meaning of food beyond the physical fact is stressed. Food is an important tool in unraveling the culture of a community because it belongs to a system of attitudes, beliefs and practices. They argued, in more detail, that food is the product that belongs to food ways that incorporate culinary smells, ingredients, sights, landscapes, sounds, eating practices, and farming traditions of people or a region. Then, food, food ways, cuisine and gastronomy are all part of a broader “system of communication.” Food ways are a way of “cultural heritage by their passing of intergenerational knowledge, taste, political power struggles, connections to nature, stories of subsistence, local environment, human sensuality, poverty and wealth” Understanding food as a heritage implies to comprehend the way by which human beings orient themselves to their IJSER.

It is the Ilocanos' way of giving thanks to the Almighty not only for the bountiful blessings but also for the rich heritage of the city, including the close family ties among the Ilocanos. This event showcases the deep-rooted religiosity of the townsfolk.

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.”What is change? For me, change is so powerful that it can improve yourself into becoming a better person or even becoming a bad person.

You can’t change the world around you by fighting it in your head. Your stress, anger, disappointment, regret, frustration, and bitterness won’t do anything to alter what it is.You are the only force that can create the change you seek, and you can only do that after you accept things as they are.Make peace with the here and now. Let go and stop resisting. It doesn’t have to mean you’ve given up on the possibility of something better. It just means you’ve decided to pursue it from a place of freedom and peace.

Choose yourself. Love yourself. Respect yourself.

If you make choices from a place of love and understanding the Universe will conspire to bring you the same things you are giving. So, love each moment, welcome each challenge, welcome each change, for the future is yours and the love inside will serve as a guiding light to a better life. Just start the change within yourself because no one can do it for you.

Changing yourself is the very first step in changing the whole world. If you want to change reality start with yourself first and attend to your own personal development. Keep in your mind that before you help others to change the world, think of yourself first or rather change your attitude.

We must change in the good way in order to preserve the earth, change must not start in a country or in a barangay, it must start with every person in order to change the future of us.

Vigan City Fiesta Club

Vigan is a city in the Philippines, on the west coast of Luzon island. It's known for its preserved Spanish colonial and Asian architecture. Before we will talk about the Vigan Festivals, I will tell a story first ofthe History of Vigan. It was in 1572 when the first Spanish colonial settlement was established in Vigan. In 1595, the first diocese was established and its first bishop was named. More than four centuries later, this historic town was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Philippines. It was also named as the first component city of Ilocos Sur in 2001. Aside from being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vigan is also one of the New Seven Wonders Cities of the World during the selection in 2014

Cobblestones and calesas – these are the two things that make Calle Crisologo distinctly Filipino. The cultural and historical sentiment comes to life instantly, especially at nighttime with empanadas and other Vigan delicacies are up for grabs for anyone who would like to understand how it was in the Philippines during the Spanish era. Otherwise known as Mena Crisologo Street, this mestizo district is lined with Spanish-style houses, and souvenir shops, that Filipino writers have been so inspired by for many years. Even to this day, the red-tiled roofs and capiz shell windows have been preserved and there is no other place like it. Taking a walk along its lamp-lit lanes feels like being in the 18th-century. The sentimental street is named after Mena Pecson Crisologo, one of the most respectable sons of Ilocos. He was a prominent writer back in the day and is known for the Ilocano version to Don Quixote.

The Vigan City Fiesta is held every January 25. It is celebrated during the feast day of the conversion of St. Paul the Apostle. St. Paul is Vigan City’s patron saint. Before his conversion, St. Paul was known as Saul, a zealous persecutor of Christians. After he was touched by a personal encounter with Jesus Christ on his way to Damascus, his name was changed to Paul and he endured a lot of hardships and danger to spread the word of God to far places.Vigan’s main church, the Metropolitan Cathedral is dedicated to St. Paul and it stands at the core of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia. The major Catholic educational institution in Vigan that stands beside the church is also dedicated to the patron, the St. Paul College of Ilocos Sur. The Vigan City Fiesta usually lasts for several days. It includes within the period the celebration of the anniversary of the cityhood of Vigan, which is commemorated every January 27.Biguenos from all over the country and even abroad return to Vigan, as it is the custom of Filipinos to return to their hometown to join their family and friends in the celebration of their fiesta. They are joined by thousands of visitors from other parts of the Philippines and other countries in enjoying the cultural shows, parades and street dancing prepared by the local government with the help of the local industries and communities. There are also food fairs, arts and crafts exhibits, as well as a visiting carnival.Participants from the different neighboring provinces in the northern region are also sent to compete in the various games and activities, particularly the street dancing competition. This participation by other municipalities makes the Vigan City Fiesta not only a local event participated in by Vigan’s officials, but a national event participated in by other local public heads and national officials. Within the Vigan City Fiesta days, the Longganisa Festival is also celebrated. The city has a longganisa-themed parade and at one time attempted to set a record for having the longest longganisa ever made. The festival has become a crowd-drawer as Vigan longganisa, a native version of Mexican salami, has a distinct garlicky taste that has become a favorite of the Filipino palate. Though other manufacturers have tried to copy the Vigan longganisa taste, they have not been successful. Biguenos attribute this to the fact that the making of Vigan longganisa is a centuries-old tradition of the local makers and all if not most of the ingredients used in making the native sausage is sourced from Vigan. Vigan’s garlic and sugarcane vinegar are said to be more strongly flavorful. It’s a great take-home gift after partaking in a Vigan City Fiesta.
